Floor Measuring Help

To ensure you get the perfect fit for your floor, it’s essential to measure your rooms accurately. Follow our simple guide to measure different room sizes for flooring.

Rectangular Room Measurement

Rectangular Rooms

Rectangular rooms can be calculated by multiplying the length by the width.

If your room is 5 metres long by 4 metres wide, the area will be 20 metres squared.
Therefore, you'll need a minimum of 20m2 of flooring.

Odd Shaped Room Measurement

Odd Shaped Rooms

For odd shaped rooms, you can easily calculate the area by splitting the room into rectangular sections, multiplying the length by the width of each section, and then adding all the areas together.

For the example above, the minimum amount of flooring needed would be 13.75m2.

Tips For Accurate Measurements

  • Double-Check: Always measure twice to ensure accuracy.
  • Round Up: Round up to the nearest centimetre to ensure you have enough material.
  • Account for Waste: Add 10% to your total square footage to account for cutting and waste.

Accessories

To complete your flooring installation, you’ll need to factor in the right accessories. Here’s how to calculate what you’ll need:

How to Measure Your Perimeter
The perimeter is the total distance around the edge of your room.

Measure each wall in your room.
Add all the wall lengths together to get the total perimeter.

Example:
If your room has four walls measuring 5m, 4m, 5m and 4m:
5 + 4 + 5 + 4 = 18m perimeter

Scotia / Beading
Scotia is used to cover the expansion gap around the edges of your room.

Take your total perimeter measurement.
Divide this by 1.2m (the length of each scotia piece).

Example:
18 ÷ 1.2 = 15 lengths of scotia needed

We recommend rounding up to ensure full coverage and allow for cuts.

Door Bars / Thresholds
Door bars are used in doorways to create a neat transition between rooms or different flooring types.

Add 1 door bar per doorway.
Door bars come in standard 1.2m lengths, which is suitable for most doorways.

End Profiles
End profiles are used where your flooring meets an edge, such as patio doors, fireplaces, or steps.

Add 1 end profile per exposed edge.
These also come in standard 1.2m lengths.

Top Tip:
Always add a little extra to your accessory calculations to allow for cutting and wastage - this helps avoid delays during installation.

10% Wastage Allowance

 Why Add 10% Wastage?

Adding 10% extra is the industry standard in the UK and ensures you have enough material to handle cuts, tricky corners, doorways, and irregular room shapes. It’s a smart way to keep your project running smoothly!

Use Our Smart Calculator

Toggle on our smart calculator to double-check your order. It will calculate the exact m² you need and confirm if your selected packs already include enough wastage.

If not, the calculator will automatically add the extra required quantity, so you’re ready to add everything to your basket!
